Original Zafu Meditation Cushion

$89.00

Taigu Original Zafu Cushion for Zazen

This original Zafu is carefully hand-made by skilled staff at Fukugonji Temple.
(Made in Japan, of course). The stitching is finer than most Zafu, and the cotton inside the cushion has been carefully stitched to prevent the panya cotton from popping out.

The design has been optimised to seamlessly incorporate zazen meditation into ones daily life.

One of the essentials you need to prepare for zazen is a zabuton (sitting futon). Zafu is a style of zabuton, regularly used in temples by monks and practitioners.

To reach this final product, repeated prototyping and rigorous review from those who practice zazen was involved. We took into careful consideration the opinions from monks, including Taigu, who performs zazen as part of his daily routine.

  • Because the zabuton is used on a daily basis, we placed the greatest emphasis on making it as firm as possible so that it would not flatten easily and stay stable when sat on. The cushions used at home may be too big or too soft, making it difficult to find the right posture, but by using a zabuton designed for zazen, you can concentrate more on the meditation.

  • The original Taigu Zafu is designed to be one size smaller than the standard zafu. The reason for this is that we aimed to make it easier for women to sit on and handle. Of course, it is also a size that can be used with ease by men and people with large physiques. It is compact, easy to handle and has been made in a size to be user-friendly for many people.

  • The aim was to create a feel that blends effortlessly into our daily lives. A slippery surface will inevitably cause your body to slide around when you sit, preventing you from concentrating on your zazen. The texture must be gentle to the touch but it should not interfere with your concentration. The material used was carefully selected based on the balance between soft and unobtrusive.

  • Zazen blends into any lifestyle and can be practiced effortlessly. With this in mind, we sought out a colour scheme that would fit into any Japanese home, from traditional in style to western. There are two colour options: Kon (the darkest of the classic Japanese indigo dye) and beige, Uguisu (the colour of the Japanese Nightingale) and beige.

Materials and Care Instructions: The cotton filling of the zabuton is made from panya cotton, a natural fibre from the fruit of the kapok tree. Compared to conventional cotton, polyester cotton, etc., the panya cotton is extremely elastic and durable. Because of its firm quality, it does not easily wear out. The ritual of Zazen is complete once you have shaped the Zafu after each Zazen session. It will last longer if you shape it by putting it on its side and pressing the sides against the tatami or floor. Apply pressure as if you are performing CPR on all sides of the cushion. If you are concerned that the Zafu is sagging, dry it in the sun and it will regain its plumpness.
