About Fukugonji

Welcome to Fukugonji, the head temple of Busshin Heart of Buddha sect.

Fukugonji, one of the most famous temples in the eastern part of Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture, is located in a hilly area lush with greenery and blessed with ever-changing scenery throughout the four seasons. Fukugonji is one of the few temples in Japan with a membership program and implements modern systems of temple administration. This sanctuary not only provides a space that heals and offers peace of mind and tranquility, but also lives as a space for internal exploration. We transcend the boundaries of religious sects to discuss the original teachings of Buddhism and “The Wisdom Needed to Live.”

Rethinking The Ways of a Monk
and Aiming to Build a Temple for The Living

When I assumed the position of the 31st chief priest of Fukugonji in January 2015, I kept mulling over the question, "What should I do to preserve the prosperity of the 500 year old Fukugonji, for another 500 years?”

After much consideration, I concluded that Fukugonji should be opened to benefit all life. Buddhism refers to the teachings of Buddha, one who attained enlightenment in India approximately 2,500 years ago. He taught not only the fundamental nature of life and the nature of the mind, but also that it was absolutely possible for all people to detach from their doubts and suffering, and attain a peace of mind. In other words, Buddhism teaches the undeniable possibility of living happily ever after. It is not a superstition or an old fable from the past.

The eminently scientific and logical teachings preached by Buddha and his disciples, have transcended thousands of years and still gives us the courage and wisdom to live today. The sutras that summarise the Buddha's teachings are rich with specific and simultaneously universal teachings on everything from how to build wealthy assets, to how to build smooth relationships and how to conduct oneself with grace..

Many visit temples only for funerals or memorial services. I find it a shame that temples with such grand buildings, full of history and wisdom, are only utilised for the dead. Moving forward, it is our intention to keep opening new gates to foster environments of learning, training, enlightenment, healing, and exchange.
